Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari
Every safari adventure begins with a question. Whether it’s your first or second time, it’s natural to wonder about the best time to visit, what to pack, or how the journey works. Here, we’ve answered the most common questions travelers ask before booking their Kenya safari, so you can plan with confidence and look forward to unforgettable memories.
Kenya’s best safari season runs from July to October, when the Great Migration fills the Masai Mara with dramatic river crossings and abundant wildlife. However, Kenya offers excellent game viewing year-round, with February and March also known for clear skies and great predator sightings.
Most travelers choose 5 to 8 days for a well-paced safari, allowing time to explore the Masai Mara, Amboseli, and either Lake Nakuru or Samburu. Shorter trips are possible, but a week gives you enough time to enjoy different landscapes and wildlife without rushing.
Kenya is home to the Big Five—lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and leopard—along with cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, and hundreds of bird species. Each park offers unique encounters, from Amboseli’s elephant herds to Samburu’s rare northern species.
A safari in Kenya is very safe when you travel with a licensed operator and follow your guide’s instructions. Camps and lodges have strong safety measures in place, and the national parks are well-managed for tourism and wildlife protection.
Most visitors need to apply for the Kenya eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) online before arrival. The process is quick and straightforward, and approval usually arrives within a few days.
Bring lightweight neutral-colored clothing, a warm jacket for cool mornings, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and a camera with extra batteries. Soft bags are preferred because safari vehicles have limited space and domestic flights have strict weight limits.
Kenya offers a wide range of lodges, luxury tented camps, mid-range camps, and budget options, each blending comfort with an authentic safari feeling. Even high-end camps maintain a close connection to nature, often offering stunning views and excellent service.
Yes—Kenya’s Masai Mara hosts one of the most spectacular parts of the Great Migration from July to October. This is when massive wildebeest herds cross the Mara River, attracting predators and creating bucket-list wildlife moments.
Kenya is very family-friendly, and many lodges offer special programs for kids, flexible meal options, and shorter game drives. With the right planning, a safari can be an unforgettable learning adventure for children of all ages.
